今年2024年の2月25日におこわれた埼玉大学の英語の問題で、2年前と全く同じ問題が出題され話題を呼びました。その問題を現役東大生、早稲田生が解いてみました！
問題
Answer in short essay between 120 and 150 words in English.
Some people think governments should spend as much money as possible exploring outer space (for example, traveling to the Moon and to other planets). Other people disagree and think governments should spend this money for our basic needs on Earth. Which of these two opinions do you agree with? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

I think governments shouldn’t spend money and time to explore outer space. First, we have a lot of problems to solve. For example, in Africa, many peoples are in wars. We should start by stopping their conflicts, not looking at outer space. Second, we don’t have enough money and time to study all of space. The universe is too vast, and our lives are too short to know what outer space is. Third, we don’t know how much profit can be gained from space. Of course, there are possibilities that we can find huge profits. However, I think it’s a coin toss. We shouldn’t bet our money on unknown areas. I believe the risk of investing in space is higher than the risk of investing in the Earth.

I believe governments should spend more money on taking care of people on Earth instead of exploring space. Firstly, it is important to use the money to make sure everyone has what they need, such as healthcare, education, and food. Spending money on these basic needs will ensure the well-being of citizens. Secondly, we are facing serious problems in the current world like climate change and poverty that require large investments. These problems affect our daily lives and need more attention. Space is indeed interesting and it can provide us with new ideas and knowledge. However, if we focus too much on space exploration, we might end up neglecting the problems we have at home. Therefore, while it’s fascinating to study space, the government should prioritize the people and the planet we already have.

I agree with spending money taking care of our basic needs on Earth such as infrastructure, welfare, and research. First, exploring outer space such as the Moon and other planets is not a big deal right now. Of course, we might go to other planets in case of emergency on Earth. However, we will live in this planet, Earth, almost for good. That means we need to enrich our basic needs and deal with social problems. Speaking of social problems, we need to focus on the economic inequality in this world. This is because people in developed country like the USA and Europe, don’t know the real situation that some are still struggling with having meals, escaping from wars, and so on. Some people may think exploring outer space will bring Earth some new perspectives, but in my opinion, we should not ignore the matters in front of us. Thus, I strongly think that governments should spend as much money as possible dealing with our basic needs on Earth.

レベルの高い回答ばかりですが、実際はAさんのレベルで書けていれば、一応の合格点は望めるかと思われます。
たしかにAさんは繰り返しの語彙が目立ったり、そもそも簡単な語彙しか使っていなかったりと、あまりうまく見えません。
一方、文法的なミスはほぼありませんし、論も通っています。
英作文の問題で重要なのは「カッコいいことを言う」でもなく「言いたいことを言う」でもなく、「お題の範囲で言えることを言う」ことです。英作文では内容が見られている線は薄い。見られているとしても、多少の点数でしょう。
では何が明暗を分けるかというと、ミスの差です。文法やスペリングにミスが有ると、減点されていきます。
確かに素晴らしい壮大なことを言いたくなる気持ちはわかりますが、それではテストで点数は来ません。
そうではなく、自分の言える範囲のことを、自分の書ける範囲の英語でミスなく書くことが求められています。
そういった意味で、Aさんの回答は、お手本のような受験生レベルの回答といえます。
埼玉大学が二度同じ問題を繰り返した意図は不明です。
とはいえ、どんな問題であろうとも、出題されたものに対応するのが受験生の努め。
どんな問題が出ても高得点が取れるように、しっかり過去問演習を積んで試験に備えましょう！
